Book Titles:
Books sell well when they have a catchy title. People browsing in a bookstore may notice the title and become curious. The title is part of the marketing scheme.
Online Content Titles:
Online content requires a different approach. When someone is looking for material to read online, they focus on wanting to get an answer to a question.
They search for that information with a search engine such as Google, or they search within a platform where they have an account, such as the New York Times, Wired, Quora, Reddit, and various social media.
The titles that show up in their search need to state what to expect. So, you need to think of it that way when creating a title for online content.
When reading a book, people like to concentrate. They ease into a comfy chair and take their time reading. They usually don’t skip around and typically don’t search through the pages looking for something that stands out.
Chapter titles merely provide a clue to what comes next. It’s different when people are reading online. They want instant gratification! They are in a rush to digest all the information.
An online reader tends to browse quickly — scanning the text while looking for the most important content.
Subtitles make relevant sections stand out so the reader can quickly find what they want. That makes it reader-friendly, which can’t be done with a printed book.
No matter which approach you choose with your writing career, the main thing to remember is your intent.
Do you intend to provide material for people to read from start to finish? Where skimming is not necessarily an issue. Then a book might be your best choice.
If you intend to provide solutions to queries people might be searching for online, and make it easy to skim through the content, then publishing online could be the best option.
If you intend to write a book, consider publishing pieces as fully functioning online articles to test their influence and effectiveness. Then, you can always improve each piece to make it ready to combine into chapters of a book.
