Learn how to achieve your goals by concentrating on what you want to accomplish and applying it systematically.

How to Stay Motivated

You may have many things you want to accomplish, but that could become overwhelming. It would help if you determined what’s essential to you and eliminated the rest. Otherwise, you might reach burnout before getting anywhere.

The goals you have remaining could be significant game-changers. So it’s crucial to give them your attention.

Let’s review strategies needed to make your goals a reality.

Understand the Cause of Procrastination

Drs. Sreenivasan and Weinberger (both Ph.D.) explained in an article in Psychology Today1  that procrastination could be viewed in two ways:

  1. I learned from them that when I’m procrastinating, it’s usually because that specific goal is not significant enough in my mind.
  2. I’m wasting energy keeping it on my list of things to do. That wasted energy could be better applied to a goal I truly intend to accomplish.

I find that when I put my attention to something, I can make it happen — but only after I’ve determined that it’s important to me.

Focus on What You Want to Achieve

The most effective goal-setting strategy begins with clear knowledge of your destination. If you’re unsure about where you’re headed, you risk wasting time on misguided efforts.

You may feel doubts when making important decisions. And those uncertainties make us hesitate to pursue our goals. So, it’s crucial to recognize what’s standing in the way.

For example, I’ve had occasions in my life when I reached a crossroads where I had to select between alternate paths. However, the available options made choosing confusing and challenging.

The right choice can bring us on a better course than we had before. So it’s helpful to consider all options by analyzing the possibilities for each. Then focus on the path that’s most crucial to your well-being.

Ask Yourself Why It Matters to You

Understanding why you want to accomplish something will help with your motivation.

Try to be honest with yourself and decide what’s essential in your life. Some things are just not that important.

Your motivation will be much more manageable when you clearly view the benefits of the goals you have in mind. So if those benefits change, it’s okay to alter your attention to different tasks.

Make It Easier With a Vision of the Outcome

Thinking of everything you need to do can cause stress because you are aware of all the complicated steps to complete the task. Furthermore, it’s unfamiliar territory, which leaves a feeling of anxiety.

Instead, try to see how it will turn out in your mind. That gives you the strength to move on with each step leading to your goal.

Avoid Stress by Taking Small Steps

I always find it easier to get something done by taking things one small step at a time.

Each step we take towards the outcome helps us adapt to the change. This allows us to progress without feeling anxious or stressed.2

Think of what’s required to get to your goal. Write down these steps so you’ll have a guide. That will provide a visual representation, which makes it much easier to follow what you expect of yourself along the way.

Manage Your Time

Time management is crucial to accomplish anything, especially with important tasks. If you find yourself doing things that are not related to achieving a specific goal, put it aside for now and stay focused. Otherwise, you’re wasting precious time.

Allow Yourself Flexibility

Unexpected twists and turns do turn up in life, so it’s crucial to be willing to make changes as they occur. When you do that, you’ll avoid feeling overwhelmed trying to achieve goals that may no longer apply to your needs.

It helps to be open to accepting new options we didn’t initially think of, which could offer a more promising outcome.

To avoid wasting time with unnecessary tasks, always consider if you are doing the right thing. You may need to adjust your goals if you realize you made a poor decision and discover a better alternative.

Benjamin Franklin’s Ideas on Reaching Your Goals

I learned four crucial points from Benjamin Franklin’s book, “The Art of Virtue,” related to achieving goals.3

Let’s review each of these items to help you reach your goals and achieve success.

  1. Let each requirement for the goal have its place.
Keeping every step leading to your goal in the proper order is vital. There is an appropriate place for every required step. Begin with the most basic steps before progressing further.
  2. Do what’s necessary.
Do not overlook essential items that must be resolved before moving on to the next task.
  3. Waste no time. Avoid all unnecessary actions.
Pay attention to your actions and stay focused. Keep asking yourself, “Is this necessary for my purpose?”
  4. Don’t be disturbed by unavoidable conflicts.
Life has a way of getting in the way. Don’t be too hard on yourself when an emergency occurs or when you need to help someone in your family. You can always return to what you were doing when things calm down.
